Opals are stones with a structure that allows easy modification of their color without the need to use chemical dyes. The modification applies only to the basic color of the opal, without affecting its iridescence. The effect of the play of iridescence colors is enhanced by contrast.

The change in the color of the opal is done by a non-invasive process known as smoking. This involves partial burning of paper or small fragments of wood in the presence of opal, which causes the release of carbon particles that settle in the porous structure of the stone, darkening its color. This process permanently gives the opal its black color and is widely used.
