Fossil
Number of products : 13Orthoceras – Ancient Fossil of a Marine Cephalopod
Orthoceras is the generic name of extinct marine cephalopods whose distinctive elongated shells have survived in the form of fossils that are hundreds of millions of years old. Their unique appearance, scientific value and metaphysical significance make them prized by collectors, jewelry makers and enthusiasts of crystal energy.
What is Orthoceras? – Origin and Classification
Orthoceras were extinct cephalopods from the subclass Nautiloidea that lived in the oceans from the Ordovician to the Triassic periods (approx. 485–200 million years ago). They had straight, segmented shells with a siphuncle used to control buoyancy. These fossils are most often found in Devonian limestone deposits, particularly in Morocco, Sweden, the USA, Russia and Indonesia.
Appearance and Structure
Orthoceras fossils are conical in shape, typically ranging from a few centimeters to several dozen centimeters long, with visible transverse segments. Their colors are usually dark gray or black with contrasting white calcite lines. They are often polished and shaped into cabochons, plates or decorative carvings.
Use in Jewelry and Decoration
- Artistic jewelry (cabochons, pendants, rings),
- Decorative sculptures and obelisks,
- Stone tiles for interiors featuring visible fossils.
Metaphysical Meaning of Orthoceras
In crystal energy work, orthoceras is seen as a stone of transformation, aiding in past-life exploration and spiritual growth. It provides grounding, enhances memory recall, supports logical thinking and strengthens the root and third eye chakras.
